The Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative is a collaborative effort between Spokane Public Schools, Educational Service District 101 and a variety of community partners. The initiative will serve six schools districts including Spokane Public Schools, Cheney, Medical Lake, Nine Mile, Riverside and Deer Park. The overarching goal of this initiative is to create a comprehensive county-wide safety system to strengthen and expand existing community partnerships and link to a broader range of community resources. The initiative is support by the Department of Education, Department of Juvenile Justice and the Department of Health and Social Services.

Programs and activities that will be enhanced or established include:

  • Advisory Committee/Partnership Meetings and Community Element Groups
  • Attendance Review Boards
  • High school re-entry program
  • Bullying/harassment prevention programs
  • Violence prevention programs
  • Youth leadership advisory teams
  • Parenting educational workshops
  • Middle school after school activity centers
  • Early childhood intervention programs (birth – 5)
  • High school Student Assistance Programs (drug/alcohol counselors)
  • School site-based mental health services and training (non-Medicaid eligible)
  • Police/school educational liaison collaboration
  • Rapid Response Mapping programs
