Safe School Environment

Goals:
- Expand state-wide safety mapping initiative to Elem. and Middle Schools with 100% of schools being mapped by Winter 2006 and 100% of buildings having a collaborative response plan by June, 2007.
- Expand safety review process district level to county level with county-wide committees in place by Jan 07.
- Provide training for development of truancy boards or other restorative justice practices to decrease truancy by 10% in 2006 and 2007, with restorative practices in place by Winter 2006 and a decrease in drop-out rates of 10% in 06 and 07.
- Establish a county-wide crisis response team to be operational by Spring, 2007.
- Establish a community-school resource liaison.
Current Activities:
- School mapping has been implemented utilizing the state model and is in the final stages of on- going upgrades. Mapping was implemented within 20 middle schools, 60 elementary schools and 7 administration buildings. Training included regional and county fire, police and emergency management staff.
- A safety review committee at the district and county level has been created. This group has gathered information regarding past and current crisis plans and has chosen to review and upgrade a county wide safety crisis plan in order to align crisis planning for Spokane County including project school districts, county fire, city and county police and the Spokane County Regional Health District.
- Truancy Boards have been established within Spokane Public Schools and plans to expand within the county schools remains. The first truancy board was established in late January, 2006. The current truancy board provides a restorative intervention for truant students grades, 2nd, 7th, and 9th within Spokane Public Schools. Currently, 107 students and their families have been requested to attend the truancy boards. Expansion to all grades will being fall of 2006. Due to the death of our ESD coordinator, expansion within the county school has been delayed.
- In order to provide coordinated effort with all project partners in the areas of training and program development, a community school resource liaison was hired in the fall of 2005. This full-time position is currently coordinating efforts toward education and crisis planning through 1) Coordinating building walk-throughs during crisis drills with school personnel/ administration, fire, and police. 2) Coordinating community safety education forums within project high schools. 3) Conducting a county needs assessment regarding crisis response and current needs. 4) Coordinating and developing a county gang reduction model. 5) Organizing the development of a county wide crisis and response plan.
