Early Childhood Psychosocial and Emotional
Development Programs
Early Childhood Group Team Leaders: Stacy Loudermilk and Nicole White (Spokane Public Schools)
Goals:
- Increase access of children birth through age 5 to early childcare and education.
- Improve parent and caregiver under-standing of positive parenting and family management that is culturally responsive.
- Provide outreach to county pre-schools, childcare providers and EC programs.
Current Activities:
- Safe Schools Healthy Students is in the process of providing training on how to implement the Devereux Early Childhood Assessment (DECA) as well as the DECA-C, which is the clinical version of the DECA. We are working with providers who are using the DECA to start gathering information about how the DECA works as a social emotional assessment tool, as well as how providers can look at their environments and teaching strategies to see how these effect children’s outcomes.
- The Early Childhood element is building relationships in the community with mental health providers, early childhood programs, and parent support providers. Through this process we have begun to identify the services that are currently being provided and started identifying service gaps.
- The early childhood facilitator has been gathering information on parenting groups and provider education groups as a means to start coordinating where people are finding information on the opportunities available to them.
