Tincan Summer Camps 2007

Registration for Tincan's 2007 teen summer camps is now open.  Be sure to register now to make sure that teens have a summer experience that is creative, interesting, and fun. Register on-line at www.tincan.org or call (509) 216-3451.

 

CSI/VIDEO GAME DEVELOPMENT
June 18-29

Be a detective, a forensic scientist and a game developer all in 2 weeks! Participants will solve a crime scene using hands-on forensic science. Turn it into an online computer mystery game to lead your character through false clues, dead ends and unsuspected outcomes. Snacks provided.

Ages: middle school students
Location: East Valley High School
Time: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Cost: $270; $20 registration fee counts toward cost of camp. Limited number of scholarships may be available.

 

MAPPING THE ENVIRONMENT CAMP
July 9-13

Understand the environment by learning how to map it using mapping software.  Put your maps online to
illustrate environmental problems such as erosion, flooding, and pollution. Snacks provided.

Ages: 13-18 years old
Location: East Valley High School
Time: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Cost: $20 registration fee. There is no additional charge for this camp. Camp costs are provided by a grant from the National Science Foundation.

 

SAVE THE RIVER CAMP
July 16-27

Do you love being outdoors, playing in the water, taking pictures or making videos? For two weeks this summer join other teens in helping keep the Spokane River healthy. Learn about the problems facing our river and document them with photography and video. You'll help produce a public service announcement (PSA) for air on TV and the Internet, and learn how to make a webpage to get important information out to the public. Go hiking, make videos, make a difference and help save the river! Snacks provided.

Ages: 13-18
Location: Peaceful Valley Community Center
Time: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Cost: $270; $20 registration fee counts toward cost of camp. Limited number of scholarships may be  available

 

MODELING THE ENVIRONMENT CAMP
July 23-27

Understand the science behind global warming. Create computer simulations to predict what will happen to the environment, and understand what the real issues are.  Change your model to see which cities will flood and what other impacts might be. Snacks provided.

Ages: 13-18 years old
Location: East Valley High School
Time: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

HELP THE ANIMALS CAMP
July 30-August 3

Help solve the problem of abused and neglected pets in Spokane. Visit area shelters and help brighten the
life of an abandoned pet. Learn how to get important messages about animal care out to the public. Campers will design and produce a public service announcement (PSA) about animal issues in Spokane for air on TV and the Internet and learn how make a webpage to educate and inspire. This is a great chance to make new friends who also care about animals while doing something good for your four-legged friends and community. Snacks provided.

Time: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Cost: $135; $20 registration fee counts toward cost of camp. A limited number of scholarships may be

MAKING ENVIRONMENTAL VIDEO GAMES
August 6-10

Solve an environmental mystery.  Create a video game with characters that are environmental sleuths fighting off potential catastrophe.  Is the cause natural or is there a villain afoot?  Your game uses science to lead players to solve the case. Snacks provided.

Ages: 13-18 years old
Location: East Valley High School
Time: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

BIZ MIZ CAMP
August 13-17

Learn to start a business (either real or fantasy) and put it online.  Each girl will have a local businesswoman to mentor them in the business start up process.  Learn what starting a business is really like, and how e-commerce happens! In return, participants will help their mentor create or improve their business web site. After school activity one day a week in the fall. Snacks provided.

Ages: GIRLS ONLY 13-18 years old
Location: YWCA Downtown
Time: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Cost: $20 registration fee. There is no additional charge for this camp. Camp costs are provided by a grant from Inland Northwest Community Foundation.

 

STREET ART CAMP
August 20-24

On building walls, bridges and in alleys in cities you can find street art, from inspiring drawings to advertisements and graffiti. In this camp we'll explore Spokane and art, looking at the different reasons people create street art, and the impact it has (good and bad) on our culture and community. We'll also set out with cameras to document some of Spokane's own unique urban art, and then make a video and webpage to share it with the world. Discover the unique gallery of art hiding right in front of you. Snacks provided.
